a few questions...Submitted by unsure in atlanta on Sun, 2008-04-06 21:08.
I went to a meeting about a decade ago when I lived in another state. Since then I've been married (and now divorced). My questions are... 1) is there a system to help us single people (not here because we got caught cheating on a spouse), with having "normal" relationships? 2) one turn off from before was the higher power part of the discussion. as an agnostic, is there another version of the 12 steps that doesn't have the "let go and let God" parts? 3) i come from a long line of alcoholics and drug abusers. i don't use drugs at all and rarely drink, my only addiction is sexual. does anyone else see a tie into other addictions in their families? Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it. login or register to post comments | email this page | printer friendly version | 137 reads | subscribe post

Unsure in ATL: In answer to your questions (my opinion only) 1. We have many single folks in the program with long-term sobriety on their "bottom lines", so yes the program works for Singles. 2.All 12 step programs are based on the concept that it takes a "power greater than ourselves" to recover. That does not mean you have to accept or believe in any one else's concpet of God or Higher Power. I would suggest reading more on this in the big book of AA (the chapter "We Agnostics") and in the other literature. 3. I too come from a long line of "addicts" and my experience is that many of us do..the "drug of choice" may be different...sex, food, alcohol, cocaine, etc. bu the disease is the same. yours in recovery,
Dear Unsure,
I too had problems with the God references at first. But I found that I could get 99.99% of what I needed from my program by just making my own substitution for the "God of our understanding". I have found 12-step groups to be largely secular but spiritual in a very general sense. Only probems I have seen have occurred when an overt evangelist leader starts trying to overlay their own brand of religion on everyone else. I no longer attend that group. tw
